The New Year is beginning on a high note for everyone here at Nisbet Plantation Beach Club. Our intimate resort has received three honors from major travel publications.

T+L 500

For the second year in a row, Nisbet Plantation was the #1 resort in the Caribbean, Bermuda and the Bahamas in Travel + Leisure’s T+L 500. Our score of 95.24 also ranked us #15 among the Top 25 Hotels in the World.

In the T+L 500 article in the January issue, on newsstands now, the editors wrote, “Three on-site restaurants … and attentive service have made this Caribbean hotel a winner for two years running.”

Gold List

In the Condé Nast Traveler 2012 Gold List, Nisbet Plantation earned a spot in the Platinum Circle of “Gold List superstars.” The honor was given for being included in the Gold List for the past five years in a row.

For 2012, Nisbet Plantation was ranked #2 in the Caribbean and Atlantic with a score of 96.1. It was the only hotel on St. Kitts and Nevis to be honored. Pick up a copy of the January issue, which is on newsstands now, to see the full list.

Best Beach Hotels & Villas

The experts at Caribbean Travel + Life included Nisbet Plantation in “The Best Beach Hotels & Villas” list in their Annual Beach Lovers Guide.

In the February issue, the editors write “The island’s only beachfront plantation inn attracts a devoted following as much for the afternoon tea and the ‘veddy British’ vibe as for the silky sands.”

Teatime at Nisbet Plantation

Afternoon tea at Nisbet Plantation was featured in the current issue of Tea Time magazine. In the January/February 2012 issue, writer Jeff Lewis features the "upscale resorts (that) give traditional afternoon tea a tropical twist" in his article, "Teatime in the Caribbean."

Nisbet Plantation was one of just six resorts featured. When describing teatime at Nisbet Plantation, Jeff says:

"The tradition of afternoon tea has been honored at the Nisbet Plantation Beach Club on Nevis, a British colony, since the resort was established in the 1950s...(Guests) can gaze down the Avenue of Palms to the sea while enjoying scones with cream, finger sandwiches, and savory carrot and banana cakes. In addition to mint, lemongrass, and sage, the most requested teas include chamomile, English Breakfast, and all the local teas, which denizens hail for their medicinal value."

Nisbet’s Dan Perkins Wins Tourism Award

Dan Perkins, the friendly bartender from Sea Breeze and the Great House lounge who always has your favorite drink ready, was recently honored by the Nevis Hotel & Tourism Association.

Dan was named Hotel & Tourism Supervisor of the Year at the 2^nd Annual Hospitality Awards. The awards ceremony was hosted by Nisbet’s General Manager Jamie Holmes, who is the Vice President of the Nevis Hotel & Tourism Association. The Deputy Premier, Honorable Hensley Daniel, and Association President, Nick Menon, were also at the ceremony to recognize the winners.

Nisbet Plantation also had two other staff members who were award nominees: Kaddy Simmonds for Hospitality Employee of the Year and Patterson Fleming for Hospitality Supervisor of the Year.

Roslyn Jeffers Profiled in Visitor Magazine

Roslyn Jeffers is one of the star members of our Nisbet family. And, she's an even bigger star now! One of our most-requested waitresses at the Great House, Roslyn was recently profiled in the St. Kitts & Nevis Visitor 2012 magazine as an interesting person from Nevis.

The honor is well-deserved and we couldn't be more proud of her.

Roslyn Jeffers
A sparkling smile, a love of people and some clever dancing feet are what make Roslyn Jeffers of Nisbet Plantation Beach Club truly someone to remember.

Since 1989, Roslyn has been a waitress at the hotel's Great House dining room. Last year, she was named Hotel Employee of the Year in the island's tourism awards. In 1999, she was named the Caribbean Hotel Association Employee of the Year.

"I like to meet people, and I love my job," said Roslyn. "I give them my all. I go the extra mile."

For afternoon tea served daily, Roslyn offers a bit more than the hum-drum English breakfast or Earl Grey. She pampers her guests with steeping private pots of local bush tea, lemongrass and honey, mint or basil. People just love it.

They also enjoy seeing her fancy steps during Nisbet's Thursday night beach barbeques and music nights. Roslyn can get the whole group on their feet, even those who seem shy and reluctant to join in.

"I just love to dance," she says, her infectious smile beaming. "And I love music. I told them when I die to put a radio in my grave."

On Thursday nights, it's common to see the waitstaff out on the dance floor once the nightly service is finished, enjoying the calypso beat and leading the guests in congo-type lines amid the swaying palms, under the stars. The magical setting and friendly staff are what guests remember when they think fondly of their days at Nisbet.

"Sometimes they want to dance, but they are scared," she explains. "But once I hold them, I give them the spirit to dance."

The mother of five children, ages 9 to 29, Roslyn loves to dance with the youngest, her son Rydel. Two work at the Four Seasons Nevis, one is attending college in Trinidad studying marine navigation and the two smallest are still in school.

A key part of Nisbet's long-standing staff, Roslyn also works each morning at the Butler's House Center, cleaning and assisting Nurse Ermin Jeffers with mothers and babies seeking medical checks.

At Nisbet, she loves to use the guests' names, continually engaging them in discussions of the island. She's even taken guests to church with her on Sunday.

Like many of her co-workers, who are like family, Roslyn enjoys the fact that so many of the Nisbet guests repeat their visits year after year. So they become like family too - just living a bit farther away.

Condé Nast Traveler Names Nisbet Plantation #1 in the Caribbean

Humbled. Excited. Thankful. The ladies and gentleman of Nisbet Plantation are feeling all of these emotions today as we just received the top honor in the 24th Annual Condé Nast Traveler Reader’s Choice Awards.

Announced last night at a star-studded event in New York City, the readers of Condé Nast Traveler ranked us as the No. 1 resort in the Caribbean! This is the first time we received the highest spot on this prestigious list.

In addition, the island of Nevis was No. 3 in the Caribbean and Atlantic. Quite an honor for our unspoiled, 36-square-mile paradise!

Even more incredible is that, earlier this year, we were also named the No. 1 resort in the Caribbean by the readers of Travel + Leisure.

Nevis Hydroponics farm: Where our fresh salads grow

Lettuce headed for Nisbet Plantation from the Nevis Hydroponic Farm

The fresh salads and produce served in our restaurants start right here on Nevis, but are not grown in the island’s rich soil.

The lettuce, tomatoes and fresh herbs are grown at a local hydroponics farm, which has been supplying us with fresh produce for more than 10 years.

Hydroponics is an eco-friendly farming method to preserve water through recirculation. It is also a more efficient way to provide food and water to the plants. The term “hydroponics” comes from the Greek words “hydro” (water) and “ponos” (labor).

When dining on the hydroponics produce, you will only notice how fresh it tastes. The flavor and nutritional content is the same as traditionally farmed items.

The produce isn’t the only item from the hydroponics farm taking center stage in our Great House. Lloyd Williams, who works at the farm, is a talented musician and entertains our guests regularly in the lounge.

Nisbet’s Calypso Star is Now the King

Nisbet Plantation's Andrew "Hollywood" Nisbett

After 14 years of competing, and 12 years of being a finalist, our Head Groundsman Andrew “Hollywood” Nisbett has been crowned king in the annual Nevis Culturama Calypso Contest!

This isn’t the first time though that Andrew held the title. He was the Junior Champion Calypso King when he was 15.

For his winning performance, Andrew sang two original songs that he also wrote. “Hungry” is a message to the Nevisian youth to focus on education and family, instead of material things. “Free Tickets” addressed the recent close election on the island.

After being crowned the Nevis Calypso King, Andrew competed in the regional Leeward Islands competition on Anguilla. He represented Nisbet Plantation and Nevis well during his performance of “Hungry” and “Calypso Jersey,” which honors past calypso kings for their contribution.

Andrew plans to use his influence as Calypso King to mentor local youth and school children.

Congratulations Andrew! We are so proud of you and know you will represent us well during your tenure as 2011 Calypso King.

Chef creates the recipe for R & R and success

Geneva Reed, founder of The Freddie Mae Leverston Leadership Foundation and author of the Chef’N It Up Simeon Style cookbook, recently visited Nisbet Plantation.

Far away from her work and responsibilities in the Chicago, Illinois area, Geneva discovered the recipe for some much-needed “R & R” in her life. She writes to us, “I miss Nisbet already. Today was my first day back to work and I was dreaming of the Avenue of Palms. I miss sitting by the pool, having tea and all of the great meals at Nisbet. What a wonderful and relaxing vacation, which was exactly what I needed.”

While on the island, Geneva also shared her recipes for success with the Nevis school children. She donated her books to the VOJN, our adopted Nevis school, on behalf of the Neal F. Simeon Career Academy of Culinary Arts. The Culinary Institute is supported by her foundation, which is committed to “making a difference one student at a time.”

Geneva also had the opportunity to meet and speak with Dr. Denzil Douglas, Prime Minister of St. Kitts and Nevis, and meet the Premier of Nevis and the Prime Minister of Antigua and Barbuda.

Coconut Palm Planting Grows

Since it began in October 2008, Nisbet Plantation's coconut palm planting ceremony has become quite popular (even earning a spot on our list of 101 Things to Do). Beginning as a tradition for our destination wedding bridal couples, we're now on our way to our 50th palm planting!

Guests have fallen in love with the palm plantings and have used it to celebrate honeymoons, anniversaries and even in remembrance of a loved one.

We recently celebrated palm plantings with Dr. and Mrs. Brad Meier of Delaware, and Mr. and Mrs. Bill Reagan of Massachusetts.

Newlyweds Brad and Katie Meier planted a palm while honeymooning at Nisbet Plantation. Dr. Meier writes, "I just wanted to thank you and the folks at Nisbet again for making our honeymoon the best it could be!"

They enjoyed their romantic honeymoon so much they are encouraging colleagues and patients back home to come experience Nisbet! We expect to entertain many guests from Delaware in the near future.

Happy 11th Anniversary to Bill and Cindy Reagan who planted a palm after their vow renewal ceremony on June 14. The Reagans were married at Nisbet on April 24, 2000 - before the palm plantings began. We're glad they returned and now have a palm tree in their honor.

Each palm planting is special and we're honored to be part of such memorable occasions. The growing palms symbolize our growing Nisbet family and bring such joy to the staff and guests as they return year after year.

Shipwreck Lecture in Nevis on Friday, June 24

Our historical beginnings are a part of what makes Nisbet Plantation unique. History is also rich throughout our beautiful island and the Caribbean.

Many of our guests enjoy learning about the history of Nevis so much so that joining the Nevis Historical & Conservation Society (NHCS) is #34 on our list of 101 Things to Do at Nisbet Pantation & Nevis.

A Caribbean history discussion wouldn't be complete without the discussion of shipwrecks. Nevis has a shipwreck, the HMS Solebay. To learn more about shipwrecks, we invite you to join the NHCS on Friday, June 24, at 6pm at the Trott House on Nevis for a special guest.

Ms. Lillian Azevedo, PhD candidate at University of Southampton, will be speaking on the topic "Shipwreck Archeology and Heritage Trails on Anguilla: Promoting Heritage Tourism through Public Stewardship and Collaboration." This event is part of the NHCS Field Study Programmes.

Azevedo is documenting and investigating methods by which heritage can be sustainably used to benefit Anguilla. She advises the Anguillan government on mitigation strategies to protect shipwreck sites from the environment and looters while promoting public ownership and historic tourism benefits. We hope Azevedo's ideas may pique interest in the HMS Solebay.

Air Canada Adds New St. Kitts Flight Service

Starting in December 2011 there will be weekly service on Air Canada between Toronto (YYZ) and St. Kitts (SKB) on Fridays. The Caribbean flight will be available during the winter travel season.

Air Canada is dubbing this service "Sun Destinations" as part of their increased routes to sunny locations. Their new schedule goes into effect the week of December 18.

A Rewarding New Year's Resolution

In January 2011, Fay Davis and Martin Howard were crowned the second prize winners in Nisbet's New Year's Resolution Contest and were awarded a $1,000 resort credit.

Traveling from Bromley, England, the couple is cashing in their prize to celebrate their honeymoon. This is their first trip to Nisbet Plantation and they are taking full advantage of their time in Nevis!

In fact, they've already crossed of Nisbet activities #53, #22 and of course #101.

First things first, the newlyweds fulfilled their New Year's Resolution and visited our adopted school, VOJN Primary School, to donate school supplies. The Howards had a lovely visit with the schoolchildren who were excited to receive the supplies and show off their classroom.

Martin explored the island of Nevis on a bike ride with our General Manager, Jamie Holmes. They rode around the entire island in less than an hour and a half!

Their stay isn't over yet but we are already looking forward to welcoming the Howards back to Nisbet Plantation and Nevis! Thank you for helping to support the children of Nevis.

Meet Mr. Lloyd Williams

At Nisbet Plantation we always enjoy live entertainment, especially from our good friend and talented saxophonist, Mr. Lloyd Williams. His samba style grooves and full repertoire of tunes - from classics to Caribbean - are a perfect accompaniment to an after-dinner cocktail.

Lloyd also plays the flute and clarinet and often sings along with a soothing voice. A truly gifted performer, he moved to Nevis with his wife Millie from Bermuda. Millie is also quite talented and you will find her proudly displaying her crafts at our famous Thursday night beach BBQ.

When he is not serenading a crowd, Lloyd tends to his hydroponic garden where he grows lettuce. This type of gardening uses a mix of mineral nutrient solutions in water, rather than traditional soil. Of course, we think the taste is superb and sure you will too - it is the base to some of our salads.

Be sure to ask Lloyd about it the next time you find yourself swaying to his rhythm in the Great House!

Congratulations to Emma-Kate Lidbury, female winner of the Nevis Triathlon!

Nisbet Plantation was honored to have the female winner of the TriStar Nevis Triathlon, Emma-Kate Lidbury, staying at the hotel. She finished 3^rd overall in the swim and 4^th overall in the TriStar racing against world champion athletes.

After arriving on Nevis, Emma-Kate discovered her race bike had been damaged during her travels but luckily she was able to get a replacement quickly! In an interview with Triathlete Europe, Emma-Kate said “The atmosphere and support from locals was superb and rivaled that of events 10 times its size.” To read the full interview, click here.

Island Conch and Dumpling Soup Recipe

By Chef Tony Piani, Executive Chef of Nisbet Plantation Beach Club, Nevis

INGREDIENTS
2 lbs      cleaned Conch meat (diced to 1/3" size and softened in a pressure cooker)
            *Make sure conch is soft before proceeding to the next step
1/2    gallon water
1 cup diced carrots
1 cup   diced red & green peppers
1/2 cup diced celery
1 cup     diced tomatoes
2 cups   diced breadfruit (can substitute with Potato, Tanya or Yucca)

Chef Tony Piani

4           Bay Leaves
1           diced medium onion
2 Tbsp   chopped garlic
3 Tbsp   olive oil
Pinch of hot pepper flakes
2            lemons, juiced
Sprig of fresh thyme
Salt and Pepper to taste
1           Chicken bouillon Cubes
Pinch of cornstarch
Chopped fresh Cilantro (optional)
Chopped Scallion

For the Dumplings
1 cup     white flour
1/2 cup coconut milk
1 Tbsp   vegetable oil
Salt and Pepper to taste

Transfer the softened conch along with the next seven ingredients (through Bay Leaves) into a large pot
In a separate bowl, combine the ingredients for the Dumplings. Roll into small balls and add it to the large pot
Saute garlic and onion in the olive oil until translucent. Then add to the large pot
Next, add the hot pepper flakes, lemon juice, thyme and chicken bouillon
Bring to a boil and add salt and pepper to taste
To thicken the soup, dissolve a little cornstarch in water and add to the pot
Place the soup in a service bowl and garnish with cilantro and scallions
Enjoy!

American Eagle Expands St. Kitts & Nevis Flight Service

St. Kitts
Starting in April 2011, there will be a daily service between San Juan and St. Kitts. Also on Friday/Saturday and Saturday/Sunday the airline will feature late evening incoming and early morning outgoing service, which will allow for easier connections at San Juan.

American Eagle will also provide same-day weekend connections from St. Kitts to Los Angeles, Dallas/Fort Worth and Chicago.

Nevis
Nevis will have three non-stop flights per week from San Juan.

A Girls' Getaway for a Big Birthday

Happy Birthday to Liz Dowling (belated - but we're on island time)! Liz is a repeat Nisbet guest and chose to celebrate her 50th birthday with a girls' getaway at our Nevis hotel this fall.

"I entertained several locations, and even though Nisbet is a bit more complicated for everyone to travel to, it was the only place that would do," says Liz. "It is truly a special place."

Liz and six of her girlfriends flew from all over the east coast for "the most wonderful celebration ever." as Liz described it. This was the first time many of the women had visited Nisbet Plantation or Nevis - and what a memorable trip it was for all.

The ladies had a wonderful trip that included relaxing on the beach, cycling around the island, being pampered at The Palms Spa, dancing at our beachfront barbeque, improving their swing with a private tennis lesson, and becoming part of our Nisbet family.

And we love celebrating with our "family!"

Steve organized the trip and took care of all the details for the group - which included a cocktail party, Violet arranged a special lobster birthday dinner, Patterson serenaded Liz with a special "Happy Birthday," Roslyn came in on her night off for the big celebration, and the bar staff created special drinks for the occasion.

American Eagle Announces Daily Nonstop Service Between Nevis and San Juan!

American Eagle Airlines, the affiliate of American Airlines, will reinstate its nonstop service aboard a 64-seat Super ATR aircraft beginning December 16, 2010.

The daily flights between Nevis Newcastle Airport (NEV) and San Juan Luis Munoz Marin International Airport (SJU) will operate on the schedule below:

Inspiring Tasty Futures in Culinary Arts

Two high school students from
Nisbet's Project Future Chef team

Recently, 10 Nevis high school students had a chance to show off the culinary skills they acquired over the past few months of interning in a demonstration and competition event held at Nisbet Plantation's Great House.

For the competition, the two teams of students, one coached by Nisbet's own Chef Elsa, prepared a dinner for 25 people. The meal prepared by “Team Nisbet” was outstanding!

The students are part of Project Future Chef, a program created by the St. Kitts & Nevis Hotel and Tourism Association to inspire, motivate and expose local high school students to the opportunities available in the tourism industry.

Chef Elsa was one of two Nevis chefs paired with the students, who interned at the hotel during school breaks over Christmas, Easter and summer. In addition to the hands-on learning in Nisbet Plantation's kitchen, the students participated in Food and Nutrition classes at their high school.

The proceeds from the demonstrations will be used to purchase equipment to improve the high school teaching kitchens. Thank you to everyone involved in this valuable program for making it a success!

Kim Collins Dines at Nisbet!

Kim Collins was the first athlete from St. Kitts and Nevis to qualify for an Olympic final at the 2000 Summer Olympic games. In 2003, he became the World Champion in the 100 meter with a personal best of 9.98 seconds.

Recently, Kim enjoyed lunch at Nisbet right on the beach with his wife and son. They even posed for a picture with the Sea Breeze team.

Nisbet Plantation Smoking Policy

After much thought and discussion among our staff and guests, Nisbet Plantation will become smoke-free in guest rooms and restaurants. Guests who do smoke are still able to do so on property, but only in open air environments.

Scorpion Rum Cocktail Recipe from Dan & Kaddy

Ingredients:

- Juice from half of a freshly squeezed lime
- 1 1/2 ounces of freshly squeezed orange juice
- 3/4 ounce brandy
- 3/4 ounce CSR rum (or another light rum)
- 3/4 ounce Cavalier Gold rum
- 1/4 ounce Triple sec
- Lime wedge for garnish

Cocktail Preparation:

1. Squeeze the lime juice into a cocktail shaker with ice cubes.
2. Add all of the other ingredients.
3. Shake well
4. Strain into a tall glass with ice cubes.
5. Garnish with the lime wedge.
6. Enjoy!

It is with great sadness that I write to you today as we have learned that resident biologist and dear friend Jim Johnson of Walk Nevis has passed away unexpectedly.

Jim was very well respected by everyone who knew him. In addition to leading rainforest walks, Mount Nevis hikes and nature excursions, Jim also conducted numerous scientific research activities on the island.

For the many of you who had the opportunity to meet Jim, you know what a joy he was to be around and what a unique personality he had. He shared his love for the island of Nevis with every guest he encountered, and truly cared about making our guests' vacations memorable.

Enjoy a Chef Tony Specialty at Home!

Roasted Plantain wrapped Snapper Fillet with Virgin Salsa and Tomato Coulis

(makes 2 servings)

Snapper

2 Snapper fillers, 6 oz each
1 Lemon or lime, juiced
Fish seasoning (and brand)
Salt and pepper
1-2 Plantains, thinly sliced horizontally
Olive oil or butter

Virgin Salsa

1/2 cup Diced tomatoes
1/2 cup Sliced scallions
2 tbsp Diced red bell peppers
1/2 tbsp Chopped basil
1/2 tbsp Chopped mint leaves
1 Lemon, juiced
2 tbsp Virgin olive oil
Salt and pepper to taste

Tomato Coulis

1/2 cup Diced tomatoes
1/2 cup Diced carrots
2 tbsp Diced onions
1/2 tsp Italian herb seasoning
1/2 tsp Sugar
1 cup Water
Salt and pepper to taste

Marinate the fish in the citrus juice, seasoning, salt and pepper for 30 minutes. Wrap it with the sliced plantain. Sear it in a non-stick pan on both sides until golden brown with a little olive oil or butter. Bake it in a 350-degree oven for 10-12 minutes until done.

To make salsa, combine all ingredients and season with salt and pepper to taste.

To create tomato coulis, combine all ingredients in a small pot. Cook until nearly thickened. Puree in a blender and pour through sieve.

Serve cooked snapper atop rice and tomato coulis, top with salsa and enjoy!

Delta has announced a second weekly non-stop flight between Atlanta (ATL) and St. Kitts (SKB). The new Wednesday flight commences December 23 and will run through April 7, 2010.

Crab Races are Back!

What's just as good as when Chef Tony's crab dishes are on the menu at Nisbet? When Patterson holds his crab races!

The weekly crab races return to Nisbet much to the liking of our guests, and even the crabs!

The races are set up as a fundraiser for Nevis' Cotton Ground Youth Fund. This first race made over US$100!

Each week Patterson gathers crabs from the beach and takes bets for the race. Numbers are painted on their backs in red nail polish. Dont worry - no crabs were harmed during this race. At the end of the race the crabs are released back into the wild.

As part of the continuing improvements to Nisbet, we even upgraded the box for the crabs from a boring cardboard box to a nicely painted wood box.

Second BA Flight to the Federation Confirmed

British Airways announced today that it will offer a second weekly flight on Tuesdays from London Gatwick (LGW) to St. Kitts (SKB).

The flight begins Tuesday, March 23, 2010. This new flight will complement the Saturday London-St. Kitts flight. From St. Kitts, Nevis is only a short water taxi or ferry ride away.

Lorraine May Need a Bigger Bikini at Nisbet

UK travel agents entered into the spirit of Nevis’ first Pirate Festival by dressing up as pirates and penning poems.

Nisbet Plantation partnered with British Airways to offer the incentive of a 7 night stay for the winning agent and their partner, to include two international flights to St. Kitts and return water taxi transfers.

Entries poured in for the competition and the winning ditty was penned by Lorraine Allen of Kuoni World Class – a leading UK tour operator. View the top four entries here.

Tara Roberts has been with Nisbet Plantation Beach Club since January 2006. She is one of the many valuable cooks in the kitchen.

A very committed and dedicated employee, Tara primarily works in the Great House kitchen, prepping for afternoon tea, dinner and any private functions at the hotel.

The rest of the dining room/bar staff knows when Tara is on duty because she clearly labels all the bar snacks and has everything well organized.

Chef Tony sometimes features her entrees on the dinner menu including Tara's Boneless Curry Chicken or Tara's Johnny Cakes.

Frank & Beatrix Kopesdy celebrated their 50th wedding anniversary with us at Nisbet.

They loved spending time with our staff and found them incredibly helpful and friendly. And Chef Piani's imaginative dishes tempted their taste buds each evening in the Great House.

The Kopesdy's enjoyed the Thursday evening entertainment and the added attraction of Patterson's singing. In fact, they liked Patterson so much that they mailed him 2 ties when they returned home!

Reggae Band Relaxes at Nisbet

In the 35 annual Nevis Culturama celebration, Nisbet Plantation was honored to host the headline band at our hotel.

Luciano and Jah Messenger, a famous reggae band from Jamaica, stayed with over Emancipation Day weekend and they loved the resort. They even entertained guests in the evening after the day's Culturama activities ended.

Nisbet's Calypso Star

Our Head Groundsman, Andrew "Hollywood" Nisbett, was a feature artist in this year's Culturama Calypso Contest. He did a great job representing Nisbet in this annual event.

The odds were in his favor as he worked his way to the top of the Calypso hierarchy finishing in fourth place. He sang "Eyes Don't Lie" and "Calypso Jersey".

Harry and and his wife Patricia are celebrating their anniversary at Nisbet this year and are part of The Reefs' Repeaters family.

Roslyn is a long-time member of our Wait Staff and was voted "Caribbean Employee of the Year" by the Caribbean Hotel Association and American Express in 1999.

Pastor Davidson Morton has been preaching for 20 years and marrying couples at Nisbet for almost as long. He has seen bride after beautiful bride walk down our Avenue of the Palms or along our white sand beach.

Pastor Morton is a spiritually-minded man, a dynamic speaker, and a caring and humorous person. He has been married for over 26 years and is proud to be able to bring couples together in marriage.

His most favorite thing about weddings at Nisbet is the historic romance of the plantation. It was here that young Fanny Nisbet was introduced to the dashing British Naval officer, Horatio Nelson. The Great House at Nisbet Plantation was her family home and her enduring love.

Delta, the world’s largest airline, announced on Thursday June 11, 2009 the addition of a second weekly direct flight from Atlanta, Georgia’s Hartsfield-Jackson International Airport (ATL) to St. Kitts (SKB). Service will begin on December 23, 2009 and will operate on Wednesdays and Saturdays.

Delta will be flying a 124-passenger aircraft leaving Atlanta Wednesday at 9:40 am and returning at the end of the week at 7:14 pm – times that are conducing to catching connecting flights!

While visiting the UK this past May, Nisbet Plantation General Manager Jamie Holmes brought a bar for his meeting with Carrier, one of the top Tour Operators in the UK.

Jamie taught the sales and reservations team to make the best Nisbet cocktails so they could get a "taste" of being at Nisbet without making the trip.

It was a big hit and everyone had a great afternoon, especially after a few cocktails! The winning cocktail was called "Carrier Me Home."

Culinary Intern Learns from the Best!

Nevis native Richelle Huggins just completed a hands-on internship with Nisbet's talented chefs.

Richelle is a student at the Clarence Fitzroy Bryant College (CFBC) on St. Kitts at the School of Hospitality and Culinary Arts. She spent a month and a half interning with Nisbet's Executive Chef Tony Piani and the rest of the culinary team.

Nisbet has awarded Richelle a $500 scholarship so that she can continue her studies in Montreal. Please join us in wishing her the best in her endeavor!

Four Couples Win Free Stays at “The Best Hotel in the Caribbean”

Nisbet Plantation, the Cinderella of the Caribbean, has declared its First Annual NCAA Basketball Cinderella Hoopla Contest a huge success! Over 5,000 people entered to win a free stay at Nisbet by guessing which teams would be named the men’s and women’s Cinderella NCAA Basketball teams for 2009.

Two lucky winners were drawn at random from those who correctly guessed the Cinderella teams. They have won a free 6-day/5-night stay at Nisbet!

Helen Woisetschlaeger from Sedona, AZ correctly guessed Arizona as the Men's 2009 NCAA Basketball Cinderella team. Arizona was the lowest ranked regional team (#12) to make it to the tournament’s Sweet 16.
Chesley Brown from Detroit, MI correctly guessed Michigan State as the Women's 2009 NCAA Basketball Cinderella team. The Lady Spartans (#9) had an impressive run beating higher ranked Middle Tennessee (#8), then knocking off #1 ranked Duke before losing to #4 Iowa by 1 point in a Sweet Sixteen matchup. The Michigan State men’s team made to the Championship game, but it was the Lady Spartans who are this year’s Cinderella team.

2009 Triathlon Winners

The 7th annual Nevis Triathlon held on March 15 was a great success. 108 competitors from 16 countries participated in the event hosted by the Nevis Cycle and Triathlon Club.

The Olympic Distance Male category saw Edgardo Velez of Puerto Rico come in first, Rafael Colon, also of Puerto Rico, a close second and Reggie Douglas, of Nevis, third.

Among the women, Janine Herweijer from the Netherlands was first, Kristina Stoney of Nevis second and Jayme Goldberg of the USA followed in third place.

Third place winner Jayme Goldberg of Plymouth Meeting, PA is a past Ironman participant. She and her husband, Andrew, were guests at Nisbet Plantation during the event.

In addition to placing third in the Olympic Distance Male category for the 2009 Nevis Triathlon, Nevis resident Reggie Douglas won the 2009 OECS (Organization of Eastern Caribbean States) Olympic Distance Triathlon. This is his 4th time winning this event!

Reggie runs our onsite biking, kayaking and windsurfing operation. So when you visit Nisbet you can stop by and meet our very own celebrity!

Visiting the Montravers Estate

Nevis is an island that is covered with the remains of historic sugar plantations.

Here are guests Lawrence, Françoise and Mia Hacking from Georgetown, Ontario at the Montravers Estate.

The Montravers Estate, constructed in the 18th century, was occupied and produced sugar for 300 years. This is one of the many landmarks you will come across on the Nevis' Heritage Trail.

Here is what is written on the sign:

Baobob Tree and Montravers Estate 18th Century

This hearty baobob tree defines the entrance to Montravers Estate, which was built by wealthy plantation owner John Pinney.

This baobob tree, the largest on the island, dates to about 1859. Its significance lies in its African origin. Traditionally, people would sit around this tree to socialize and chat. This tree marks the entrance to Montravers Estate, which was one of several sugar estates built by English planter John Pinney. This estate is particularly unusual because of the three story stone Greathouse and camel barn, which Pinney built to house six camels he brought in from England. The camels did not survive on Nevis, but the Greathouse remains, barn, cookhouse, and slave village still can be seen on the site, located about a mile up the road on the right.

A Palm Planting Poem

Our new wedding tradition, planting a new coconut palm in honor of the bride and groom, has become quite a popular activity.

John & Joan Stainsby (pictured below with their new coconut palm) have been visiting Nisbet for 15 years and a were wed here 5 years ago. During their recent vacation they planted a new palm tree to commemorate their vows and enhance the environment.

Off-Roading on Nevis

New BA Flight from London to St. Kitts

Now it is even easier to get to Nisbet when you find yourself dreaming of a warm Caribbean escape during these icy winter months.

As of today, British Airways offers a flight each Saturday from London to St. Kitts. It is the only weekly scheduled service from the UK to the Federation.

The new BA service will depart London Gatwick’s airport at 10.30 a.m., arriving at the St. Kitts airport (SKB) at 4:45 p.m. The return flight will leave St. Kitts at 6:45 p.m., arriving at London (Gatwick) at 7:50 a.m. the next day. BA will use a three class, 280 seat Boeing 777 aircraft with 40 Club World seats, 24 World Traveler Plus and 216 World Traveler seats.

Once you have booked your travel schedule, be sure to let us know. We have representatives at both the St. Kitts and Nevis airports to greet you, but only if you call to let us know when you're arriving. Nevis hosts 7th Annual Olympic Triathlon

The Nevis Cycle and Triathlon Club is gearing up for the 7th Annual Olympic/Sprint Triathlon. The event, known as Carino Health Spa Triathlon, attracts athletes from all over the world.

In 2008 there were 128 athletes from 25 countries who attended and the event is now the second largest tri event in the English speaking Caribbean.

Regional athletes set to compete in the 2009 event will represent Trinidad, Barbados, St. Martin, Tortola, St. Thomas, St. Croix, Puerto Rico, as well as St. Kitts & Nevis. A huge milestone was passed with the race being sanctioned as an ITU Continental Cup event, offering ITU and PATCO qualification points to the competitors.

For the fourth time, the event is sanctioned by the Organization of East Caribbean States (OECS). In recognition of this special status, the Nevis Cycle and Triathlon Club will award the top male and female OECS nationals with a champion’s trophy. Current female champion Claire Morrell of Grenada and defending OECS male champion Reggie Douglas from Nevis will be ready and willing to take on any challenges to their titles.

THE COURSE

The swim will take place in the Gallows Bay in downtown Charlestown. There will be a beach start following a simple triangle format - two laps for the Olympic distance swimmers and one lap for the sprint. Upon completion of the swim competitors will run along the bay front for approximately 60 meters to the transition area where their bicycles will be stationed.

Upon leaving the transition area, the bikers will head north along the main island road, towards the airport and the turnaround point. The bicycle course is relatively flat with a maximum elevation of 150 ft. Bikers will loop the course twice for the Olympic distance and once for the Sprint, before heading back to the transition area to prepare for the run to the finish.

The run course will be two laps for Olympic and one for Sprint. The run is flat, heading north from town out to the Four Seasons Resort Nevis, where they will turn around and head back to the finish line on the waterfront in Charlestown. Here the winners will be crowned as champions of the 7th Annual Olympic Triathlon.

Daily Flights to Nevis Resume

American Eagle's daily flight between San Juan, Puerto Rico (SJU) and Nevis (NEV) has resumed as of Tuesday, November 25, 2008.

AA Flight 5086 departs San Juan at 12:40pm arriving in Nevis at 1:40pm. Return flight 5087 leaves for San Juan at 2:30pm.

As of November 3, 2008, the American Airlines direct flight from Miami, Florida (MIA) to St. Kitts (SKB) became daily scheduled service.

AA Flight 2299 leaves Miami at 11:05am and arrives in St. Kitts at 3:00pm. Return flight 2280 leaves St. Kitts at 4:05pm arriving in Miami at 6:30pm.

A Palm for all Weddings

As you may know, we recently began a wedding tradition of planting a coconut palm in honor of the bride and groom.

Married 12 years ago at Nisbet, Beryl and Michael Sargent returned to celebrate their anniversary. The Sargents loved the idea of planting a new palm tree, so we decided to plant one in their honor, too.

But why stop there? We are extending our palm tree planting to all couples who were married at Nisbet Plantation in the past. When you return to Nisbet we will have a palm tree and shovel waiting for you. (Just promise to be careful with the shovel!)

Newcastle Pottery

One of our favorite bartenders, Dan Perkins, also creates beautiful ceramic pottery at a local pottery shop.

Dan, along with three other local potters, run the Newcastle Pottery Cooperative. It was built on government land by a grant from the Canadian government to support the arts and cottage industries in the Caribbean.

They regularly host the primary school children for experiential field trips as a way to give back to the community.

The local craftsmen are responsible for providing many of the decorations around the plantation, including the light fixtures in Coconuts, ashtrays, candleholders and many of our plant pots.

Best of all, the pottery shop is located across the street from the entrance to Nisbet Plantation. So the next time you are at Nisbet be sure to stop in for a visit and support the local arts. And say "Hello" to Dan, too!

Coconut Palm Planting

At Nisbet Plantation we have a new wedding tradition. Newlyweds have the opportunity to enhance the environment and commemorate their vows with the planting of a new coconut palm tree on the grounds. The new coconut palms are planted near our Avenue of the Palms.

The newlyweds can return year after year to see how their coconut palm has grown.

The first couple to participate in our new wedding tradition were Paul and Amanda Alchin from the UK. Their palm tree was planted on Saturday, October 18, 2008.

No Damage from Omar

We've had some inquiries about how Nisbet Plantation fared from Hurricane Omar October 16.

Not one of our dozens of majestic palm trees sustained damage and the resort is completely unharmed.

Nisbet's location on the Northeast corner of Nevis protected it from the wind. Some other hotels on the west coast of the island did sustain some damage. Repairs are being made and we hope they have a speedy recovery.

Guests who were with us during the storm enjoyed gathering in the Great House. Once the sun reappeared everyone was happy to see Nisbet just as beautiful as ever!

You might also be wondering if the recent storms have affected air travel to the islands. We can very happily say it has not!

Beginning November 3, the American Airlines flight from Miami (MIA) to St. Kitts (SKB) becomes daily. And starting in January, British Airways will offer a flight from London's Gatwick Airport to St. Kitts every Saturday. From St. Kitts, Nevis is just a short water taxi or ferry ride away! At a meeting of top hotel executives St. Kitts & Nevis Prime Minister Hon. Dr. Denzil Douglas unveiled his plan for improving "small hotels by offering incentives tied to providing a quality vacation experience."

The goal is for local hotels to improve their product, image and ultimately attract more sophisticated travelers to the islands.

We promise to do or part to help the Prime Minister achieve his goals. There’s always room for improvement, but it may be difficult for Nisbet Plantation, who TripAdvisor rated as "the very best Caribbean luxury hotel in 2008!"

Geo Caching

Adventure seekers traveling to Nevis now can participate in the high-tech treasure hunt game known as Geo Caching.

Geo Caching involves the hiding and then locating of geographical "treasure chests" using GPS coordinates. The chests contain a log book to register in and an ink pad and stamp. Collect a stamp from each cache and you can receive discounts for various attractions across the island.

Adventure Tours has set up five Geo Caches at historically significant places around the island. You can locate them, and then learn about the Pirates that came through this part of the Caribbean.

Here is a picture of the five Geo Caches so you will recognize them when you find them. They are all carefully handmade, so when you find them please do not take them. Leave them for others to enjoy!

A Warm Welcome for Nisbet's New General Manager

Nisbet Plantation welcomes its new permanent general manager, Jamie Holmes.

A native Floridian, Mr. Holmes has managed hotels and resorts from Boston and Newport to the Virgin Islands including Peter Island Resort, Biras Creek Resort, and Ritz-Carlton Resort and Ritz-Carlton Club, St. Thomas.

Glen and Erin Hurd, specialists in short-term assignments, were lured to Nisbet in 2007 for a three-month stint as interim managers during the search for a permanent manager. The magic of Nisbet kept them here for two years.

Mr. Holmes brings his wife Michelle and three children to Nisbet. Quiet, unspoiled Nevis is well-known for its sense of family, and the Nevisians at Nisbet welcome the Holmes family with open arms. In his leisure, Mr. Holmes enjoys cycling, sailing and photography – perfect for exploring Nevis!

Save the Palm Trees

If you have stayed with us at Nisbet you may have noticed that many of the palm trees were missing their fronds. This is caused by a lethal yellowing disease that has spread throughout the Caribbean that affects the mature palm trees.

Our team at Nisbet is doing our part to save the palm trees you have grown to love and expect when you arrive at a tropical island such as Nevis.

Andrew (grounds supervisor), Winston and Tyrone treat our palm trees every 3 months with antibiotic injections into the trunks of the trees. This is not a cure for the lethal yellowing disease, but simply prolongs the life of the palms.

Daily Miami to St. Kitts Flights

Getting to our lovely island of Nevis keeps getting easier and easier!

American Airlines has just announced daily direct flights from Miami (MIA) to St. Kitts (SKB) beginning November 3. Until then they offer direct flights Wednesday, Friday and Sunday.

Once in St. Kitts you have the option of either taking a scenic ferry ride or a private water taxi to Nevis.

We only just loaded some of our photos onto the computer, and I wanted to share this one with you.

We stayed at Nisbet from May 8-18, 2008 in Indian Castle. I wanted to say hello especially to those with whom we had the most interaction - the Breakfast Crew. Angela, Violet, Melissa, Glendina, Curtis, Neikevah, and Ilesha; and to Chef Elsa who kept me in delicious breakfasts and particularly those blueberry muffins. I so looked forward to those yummy, leisurely breakfasts every day in such a wonderful setting - truly, I did.

Greetings also to the dapper Patterson in the Great House, Dorette and all the Housekeepers; Leonora in Reservations, and Erin Hurd in Management - as well as to all those whose names we did not know and all the behind-the-scenes staff, too.

Thank you for making our vacation, and anniversary, so pleasantly memorable.

Cinderella Coach Visits Nisbet

If you’re an NCAA FANatic who sees March Madness as a near spiritual experience you should have been at Nisbet in May. Coach Bob McKillop, the architect of Davidson’s Cinderella NCAA performance this year, and his wife Cathy spent a week relaxing at Nisbet Plantation.

After one of the NCAA’s most exciting Cinderella performances (tiny Davidson defeated powerhouses Gonzaga, Georgetown and Wisconsin before falling one shot short against Kansas - the eventual Champion) Bob & Cathy certainly needed a break from all the Madness. Everyone here at Nisbet was happy to help.

Congratulations Coach on being named the National Association of Basketball Coach of the Year! We look forward to seeing you and the fine young men of Davidson in the tournament again next year. Go Wildcats!

Kasanova Band Performs at the St. Kitts Music Festival

If you’ve ever stayed with us on a Thursday night, you surely enjoyed our delicious BBQ served at either Coconuts or Sea Breeze by the beach. You probably also danced the night away to the tunes of the Kasanova Band, a talented local band that plays a wide variety of songs.

For the first time ever, Kasanova will be performing at the annual St. Kitts Music Festival. The 12th annual St. Kitts Music Festival will be held from June 26 to 28. In addition to our talented house band, performers will include Billboard-winning artist Mario, Ja Rule, and John Legend.

Tickets to the festival are $50 per person, per event, and are available for purchase at www.stkittsmusicfestival.com.

Nisbet’s Fashion Shoot

Nisbet Plantation’s beautiful property is now the perfect spot for a fashion shoot, or two. Both Marie Claire and Easy Living magazines did fashion shoots at Nisbet featured in their May issues. Interestingly, both publications included a shot in the same location just outside the reception area.

Pick up a copy of each and see up close and personal shots of the Avenue of the Palms, our cottage accommodations scattered throughout the property, and our Great House.

Nisbet Participates in Earth Hour

Nisbet Plantation was the first business on the Federation of St. Kitts and Nevis to sign up for Earth Hour 2008. On Saturday, March 29 we turned off all non-essential lighting and electrical appliances from 8:00 to 9:00 pm. We even asked our guests to join us in the global movement by turning out their room lights and air-conditioners when they headed to the Great House for dinner.

We placed out more candles than usual for dinner service in the Great House Dining Room, so that in the absence of electrical lighting, the dining experience was even grander than guests were usually accustomed to. In addition, our pianist, Darren Sutton, entertained in the Great House Lounge. The ambiance of the candlelit dining room, complete with the sweet sounds of the Baby Grand and exquisite cuisine prepared by Executive Chef Tony Piani and his talented culinary team, enhanced the elegance of our 1787 Great House and conjured up images of yesteryear's splendor that remains on our gracious Plantation.

Alexander Hamilton Subject of PBS Special

Alexander Hamilton, who was born on Nevis and later became one of the foremost early American statesmen, will be the subject of a new PBS 90-minute documentary.

Production is in the preliminary stages with filming scheduled for 2009 and broadcast in 2010. You heard it first on Nisbet’s Blog.

Hamilton was one of the most influential founding fathers establishing America’s economic system, justifying the Constitution in the Federalist Papers and helping George Washington with the American Revolution.

Perhaps because he never became President Hamilton is not as well known as many of the other founding fathers. Hopefully the documentary will shed more light on Alexander Hamilton and the wonderful little island where he was born.

Botanical Gardens of Nevis Open Year-Round!

Guests of Nisbet Plantation love to visit the Botanical Gardens of Nevis where hundreds of tropical species, whose origins span the globe, create seven heavenly acres and the foremost botanical display in the Caribbean.

The Rainforest Conservatory includes ruins of a lost temple where delicate floral treasures grow in the mist of thundering waterfalls.

You will be pleased to know the Botanical Gardens has new hours. That means you can go anytime!

The Gardens grounds are now open seven days a week, including public holidays, from 9:00am to 5:00pm.

The "World Art and Antiques" gift shop is open 9:00am to 5:00pm Monday through Saturday (closed Sundays).

The 1787 Bar/Bistro is open six days a week for lunch, sundowners, and dinner (closed Wednesdays). Hours are from 11:30am to 9:00pm.

A little planning will allow time for shopping in the always interesting "World Art and Antiques" gift shop or a nice lunch on the veranda.
