Over the past month Nisbet Plantation has installed its artificial reefs system and already Mother Nature started performing her own special magic. Isn’t she wonderful?

So far an additional 15 feet of sand has magically appeared on the beach which is now almost completely seaweed free. The small rocks that used to be in the water making it sometimes difficult to wade in have all been covered with sand. And the new reefs system is now teeming with all sorts of colourful marine life for you to enjoy.
All-in-all the swimming experience at Nisbet’s beach is nothing short of magical making it the Caribbean’s perfect beach vacation.
Thank you Mother Nature!

What kind of artificial reefs did you use for your reef? Do you put them in yourselves?
My husband and I visited your place while in St. Kitts and saw some people working on the reefs. Are they going to put them in all down the beach where those palm trees were laying in the water? We hope to stay there next season when we visit and will come later when you are open. Beautiful resort!
Thank you for expressing interest in our Artificial Reefs program. Nisbet Plantation retained the services of Artificial Reefs, Inc. (www.artificialreefs.com) and Coastal Restoration, Inc. (www.coastalsolutions.com) to develop an artificial reef system specifically designed as a complex habitat to promote species diversity and as a long-term, stable, productive and durable anti-erosion management tool. Each individual "Fish Haven" stands over 4.5 feet tall with an 8 foot base on each of three sides weighing 1500-2200 lb. Following a comprehensive bottom survey of the reef site, Phase 1 of our project was completed in early September with the professional deployment (performed by Artificial Reefs, Inc.) of 64 fish havens to replicate the hydrodynamics of a natural, barrier reef system stretching across the middle section of our beach from the Sea Breeze Beach Bar & Restaurant on the east side across to the far side of our most popular swimming cove on the west. Should a second deployment be deemed necessary to further protect the remaining portion of the beach front, Phase 2 will be deployed in 2008, extending to the far eastern boundary of the property leading to Herbert's Beach.
What this means to our guests is a calmer, safer beach with a sandy bottom and dramatically reduced seaweed levels, making for a more enjoyable beach swimming experience. As a bonus, the new fish havens are providing an exciting new snorkeling opportunity! Several species of tropical fish have already moved into these new beachfront "condos" that are quickly being covered by soft corals and marine growth.
We recently had Coastal Restoration Inc come to Ocho Rios Jamaica for a conference after viewing in person the success of your project in Nevis. They have quite an interesting and very effective technology. We hope it will help us out in Negril.
We will keep your BLOG up to date Thanks!
